Urushi Japanese lacquer dial 'Hibi'The patterns on this dial are created through precise application of a natural protein to the dial during the curing process of the Urushi lacquer. This reacts with the lacquer to give organic crack-like textures on the surface.
The pattern itself evokes images of fissures formed over time in the earth, or the natural textures etched into a dried lakebed. Each time you wear it, the dial reveals a new and ever-changing expression.
*Due to the nature of the traditional Urushi finishing process, each dial may exhibit variations in texture and pattern. Shaped by both craftsmanship and chance, no two pieces are ever the same. These unique characteristics are inherent to the material and are not considered defects, and may differ from provided images.
What is Urushi?
The dial of this timepiece features Urushi (Japanese lacquer), one of Japan’s most revered traditional crafts. Harvested from the sap of the lacquer tree, Urushi is regarded as one of the most durable and beautiful natural coatings in existence. Its name is said to originate from the Japanese words meaning “beautiful” and “to enrich,” reflecting its timeless cultural significance.
For centuries, Urushi has captivated people with its deep tones and lustrous sheen. Born from nature itself, it embodies a material that evolves over time, deepening in character and expression. Urushi can truly be described as a material that reflects the Japanese cultural philosophy of living in harmony with nature.
Each dial is meticulously handcrafted by skilled artisans in a workshop located in Uji, Kyoto. Urushi is not merely a protective coating; it softly reflects light and develops greater depth and richness as time passes, growing alongside its owner.
Within this material lies a distinctly Japanese aesthetic philosophy—transforming a watch from a simple instrument that measures time into a treasured object whose material beauty itself matures and evolves over the years.
SOMBRERO 90-011 is a diver’s watch with water resistance up to 20 ATM. It is powered by the Japanese-made premium MIYOTA Cal.9039 movement with a high-beat frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour.
Its distinctive design is highlighted by an inner bezel and dual crowns positioned at the top and bottom, creating a unique aesthetic that evokes a refined vintage character.
